Hampshire Youth Rugby League Association are pleased to announce Wimborne Rugby League Club as the latest club to join the league.
Wimborne RL is a new project run by the highly successful junior section of Wimborne rugby union club and formerly established in June this year. The club have entered their under 12's into HYRL's July fixture festival, playing as the Dorset Dragons.
Dragons head coach Nick Elbourne has put a lot of work into the foundations of the team after qualifying as a rugby league coach earlier this year and attending several training sessions at Southampton Spitfires and Coxford Tigers. Player recruitment has gone well with their first session attracting nine players. By the second session that figure nearly doubled when fifteen turned up and is continuing to grow.
HYRL recommends a squad of 20 players for each team with a match day squad of 15 (games are played 10-a-side under modified rules), so the Dragons are well on their way to hitting their squad target.
Wimborne RL have now affiliated with the Rugby Football League and are in the process of registering their players through HYRL ahead of their first friendly later this month.
Speaking of their rapid progress head coach Nick Elbourne added "We had nine at our first rugby league training session in Wimborne with the emails only going out at the last minute so I was optimistic that we would be able to build a viable squad and the turnout at the second session confirmed that. We're really pleased to be joining Hampshire Youth Rugby League Association and seeing how our team develops".
Wimborne is the third new club formed since the Hampshire Youth Rugby League Association was launched earlier this year.
Everyone at HYRL wishes Wimborne RL and the Dorset Dragons the very best for the future.
